Destination Overview
Maui is the island that feels like pure magic — a tropical paradise shaped by fire and softened by waterfalls.
It’s an island of contrasts: volcanic peaks touching the clouds, black and red sand beaches below, and lush green valleys that seem to hum with life.
Known as “The Valley Isle”, Maui is where adventure meets peace.
You can wake up above the clouds on a volcano at sunrise, swim with sea turtles by noon, and chase waterfalls before sunset. It’s Hawaii in its most cinematic form — wild, colorful, and deeply spiritual. 🌋✨
Why We Loved It
What makes Maui so special is its energy — raw and grounding at once. It’s the kind of place that humbles you with its beauty and reminds you that nature is the real luxury.
We spent our days chasing waves, sunsets, and rainbows — driving along dramatic cliffs, swimming beneath waterfalls, and falling asleep to the sound of the Pacific.Every moment here felt alive — Maui has that rare ability to make you feel small in the best possible way. 🌈
Where to Stay
We stayed at Aston Maui Hill Resort, a comfortable and welcoming base in Kihei.Spacious rooms, a great location, and a relaxed local vibe — perfect for exploring the island’s southern coast.
If you’re heading east to explore the legendary Road to Hana, consider breaking the journey with an overnight stay.
We stayed at OceanView Lofted Studio (#202) – Hana Kai Maui — a charming Airbnb perched right above the ocean, surrounded by nothing but waves, wind, and jungle.
💡 Tip: A 4x4 jeep is highly recommended — not just for comfort, but because it gives you the freedom to explore Maui’s wilder corners.
Where to Eat
🍍 Lava Lava Beach Club (Kihei) – fun, beachy, and vibrant.
🍲 Nalu’s South Shore Grill (Kihei) – local favorite with healthy, flavorful Hawaiian dishes.
🍌 Hana Harvest – a roadside stand with the best banana bread on the island.
🍧 Ululani’s Shave Ice near Sugar Beach – an absolute must for a sweet, colorful treat.🥗 Hāna Ranch Restaurant – cozy and scenic dinner spot in Hana with locally sourced ingredients.
☕ Kihei Food Oasis – a cluster of food trucks and stalls; we loved the acai bowls here!
Top Things to Do
🏄 Ho‘okipa Beach
A world-famous surf beach where waves crash dramatically and sea turtles rest lazily on the sand.Come for sunset — it’s the perfect mix of local surf culture and natural beauty.
🌴 Iao Valley State Park
A lush green valley tucked between towering peaks — one of Maui’s most breathtaking spots. The walk to the iconic Iao Needle viewpoint is short (about 15 minutes round trip) and suitable even with sandals. The air here feels ancient — full of mist, birdsong, and peace.
🚙 East Maui Drive & Cliffs
Exploring the island’s eastern side by jeep is an adventure in itself.Narrow, winding roads lead to dramatic cliffs and ocean views that feel like the edge of the world. Drive slowly — every turn is worth it.
🌅 Kaanapali Beach
Golden sand, palm trees, and one of the best sunset spots on the island. It’s lively but still has that effortless Hawaiian charm.
🌺 The Road to Hana
The legendary Road to Hana is more than just a drive — it’s an experience of a lifetime.Winding through rainforests, past waterfalls, sea cliffs, and bamboo groves, it’s one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world. Some do it in one day, but we highly recommend staying overnight in Hana to truly feel its magic.
Here are our favorite stops along the way:
🪸 Honomanu Bay – a wild, untamed beach early on the route.
🍌 Banana Bread Stand – there are many, but Hana Harvest is a local favorite.
💧 Pua’a Ka’a Falls – small, tranquil waterfall perfect for a refreshing swim.
🌺 Upper Waikani Falls (Three Bears) – triple cascade surrounded by rainforest.
🏖️ Hamoa Beach – one of Maui’s most beautiful beaches, framed by lush cliffs.
🌴 Waianapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach) – otherworldly volcanic sand and sea caves.
🔥 Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu Beach) – a hidden gem with iron-rich cliffs and a surreal red shoreline (be careful — the path is steep and slippery).
🌊 Wailua Falls – tall and easy to access, right by the roadside.
🌿 Pipiwai Trail & Waimoku Falls – an unforgettable hike through a bamboo forest leading to a 120-meter (400 ft) waterfall — one of the most beautiful in all Hawaii.

💡 Tip: Start early, pack snacks and swimwear, and expect rain — that’s what keeps it so green!
🌋 Haleakalā Volcano at Sunrise
Waking up before dawn to climb above the clouds might be one of the most emotional experiences we’ve ever had. As the first light spreads across the crater, it feels like the world is being reborn.
It’s cold — really cold — so bring layers, blankets, and even a thermos of coffee. The entrance requires advance reservations, so book early on the National Park website.
💡 Tip: After sunrise, drive slowly back down — the light across the valley is pure magic.

calm turquoise water and often sea turtles swimming nearby.
